Tips for choosing the best locks for security doors

Security doors with robust stainless steel mesh help to prevent forced entry as they are almost impossible to kick in or break. The best quality doors pass rigorous tests for knife shear, anti-jemmy, heavy impact and more.

But while security doors can be a great solution for reducing the risk of burglary, they can be let down by poor quality locks.

This is because kicking in or breaking a door are not the only methods burglars attempt to make their way in – some also have skills in picking locks!

Some of the popular methods of picking locks include lock bumping (a method of bumping lock pins out of line with a key or other instrument and a hammer), and lock drilling (inserting a drill bit into the keyhole to destroy the pins). It’s likely that most standard domestic door locks are capable of being bumped or drilled.

So if your locks are average or on the weak side, it might be time to consider replacing them with something a bit stronger.

How to choose a front security door lock

Your front door should have a high-security lock for best prevention. High-security locks come with features that prevent them from being picked.

This means that at the very least your lock should be made from high quality robust materials and have anti-bump and anti-drill properties.

Anti-bump cylinder locks have more pins and shallow pin stacks than average, making the locks very hard to bump. Locks with anti-drill features contain hardened materials that are difficult to drill through. A drill attempt on such a lock can result in the drill burning out – in turn slowing down or stopping the attempts of an intruder.

Ideally a security door should also have 3-point locking, which locks the door at three points along the jamb. 3-point locking systems also help prevent a door from being wrenched off.

At MSD, we pair Australian-made Lockwood 8654 hinged security screen door locks with the doors we install, as they are robust and have excellent security features. Lockwood is also a tested and trusted brand with a good reputation.

The features and benefits of these locks include:

  • Option of 3-point locking system.
  • Hooking system instead of straight bolts – making it even harder to prise the door.
  • Anti-bump cylinders.
  • Anti-drill capabilities.
  • No cables that can be cut.
  • Stronger handles than average locking systems.
  • 2-stage key locking – allowing you to lock the door from both the inside and outside if desired.
  • Inside snib locks.
  • Streamlined looks – with a range of options for finishes.
  • 25-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Note: our Crimsafe doors come with the triple lock version of the Lockwood 8654, while our steel security doors come with the single-hook version and the option of triple locks if preferred.
