Keeping your security windows clean can improve their efficacy in a number of ways, and while the cleaning process may not seem immediately straightforward, it is quite simple! Creating a cleaning schedule or marking on your calendar can be a great way to ensure cleaning your security window screens isn’t forgotten. If you live near salt water or have a chlorinated pool, you should consider a weekly or fortnightly schedule. Otherwise, a monthly clean will often be enough for most security windows and doors. Step 1 – Vacuum

If you own a hand vacuum, or you can reach your security screen with a corded vacuum, you may like to begin removing some of the dust and grime from the mesh this way. The vacuum is also a great way to clean the tracks, inside and outside.

Step 2 –Hose down or use an air compressor (optional)

Should you wish to hose down your security window screen, please stand a metre or so away so as to preserve the paint or any powder coating. A hose can be really effective at washing out salt, dirt and dust that may be trapped in the mesh.

A can of compressed air could do a similar job by dislodging grime instead of using a hose.

Step 3 – Wash with soapy water or a Crimsafe cleaning product

Crimsafe Wash & Wax, Stain Clean and Microfibre Cleaning Glove are formulated to effectively dissolve grime and leave streak-free results. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of warm water and mild detergent – please ensure your chosen product won’t be harsh on paint or coating. Avoid anything too acidic or chemical heavy.

A microfibre cloth can be great for washing and polishing if you have a wet cloth and a dry cloth. You can also use a brush, but please be mindful of coarse bristles that might leave scratches. If your security window is scratched, a microfiber cloth can help buff it out, particularly with Crimsafe wax or car polish in a pinch.

Step 4 – Rinse

You may like to rinse using a hose from about a metre back, or use a clean brush/cloth with plain warm water.

Step 5 – Dry and polish

A dry cloth, preferably microfibre, can help dry your newly cleaned window. If you have time, allow some air drying before you come back in with a clean microfibre cloth to polis
